Official site

Pane review

Pane is a free desktop app that gives each coding-agent task its own git worktree, with a phone option for watching them. We read the vendor's site and GitHub pages in October 2026. We did not run an independent test.

Who it is for

Developers on any desktop OS who want an open-source tool to run several command-line agents side by side and keep an eye on them away from the desk.

What stands out

Any agent that runs in a terminal works without a plugin. Each pane gets its own worktree, port range and copy of your .env files. Panes hold tabs for agents, terminals, a diff view, files and a built-in browser.

A runpane CLI and an MCP server let agents open panes and send input. Loops run an agent or command on a schedule. Hosts from your SSH config open as terminal tabs.

Remote Pane runs the work on a self-hosted machine and connects from another desktop or a phone browser, over Tailscale or an SSH tunnel. Release v2.4.204 of 27 October 2026 has installers for macOS, Windows and Linux, each for both Intel/x64 and ARM.

Where it falls short

Price

Free. The pricing page says there is no subscription and no per-seat fee, and that Dcouple plans paid cloud and team services later. None were listed. Seen 28 October 2026.

Verdict

Choose it if you want a free, open-source worktree workspace on Windows, macOS or Linux with remote hosts and phone access. Look elsewhere if you need a permissive licence or a supported hosted team product.

Facts: platforms, price and licence

platforms
macOSWindowsLinuxDesktop installers for macOS (arm64 and x64 .dmg), Windows (x64 and arm64 .exe) and Linux (x86_64 and arm64 AppImage/.deb) in release v2.4.204. Windows installer is unsigned per the homepage (SmartScreen warning). Phone access is a browser PWA at runpane.com/app (Remote Pane), not a store app; a native mobile project (Capacitor, ios/android folders) exists in the repo but no store listing was verified.
price
FreePricing page: 'Pane is free and open source under AGPL-3.0. No subscription. No per-seat fee.' (seen 2026-10-28). The page says Dcouple plans separate paid services (managed cloud worktrees, team features) later; none were listed as available.

Pane features

✓ documented · – absent or not in its feature list · ? not verified

Pane strengths

  • Free desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, source on GitHub under AGPL-3.0 (LICENSE file read)
  • Runs any CLI agent without plugins; one pane per task with its own worktree, port range and copy of .env secrets
  • runpane CLI and an MCP server let agents create panes and send input; Loops run agents on a cron schedule
  • Remote Pane runs panes on a self-hosted machine and is controlled from desktop or a phone browser, over Tailscale or an SSH tunnel; SSH config hosts open as terminal tabs

Pane weak points

  • Licence is AGPL-3.0 with extra Section 7(b) terms (visible Dcouple attribution in the UI, no use of the Dcouple or foozol names for endorsement); GitHub shows it as 'Other', not plain AGPL
  • Windows installer is unsigned, so direct downloads trigger SmartScreen; the site suggests a PowerShell installer instead
  • Phone access is a browser PWA that supports terminal-backed remote sessions only, and needs Tailscale or an SSH tunnel; no store app was verified
  • Very fast releases (v2.4.204, several per day in late October 2026), and branding is in flux: repo owner is greenfield-inc, LICENSE and footer say Dcouple Inc, homepage says 'formerly Dcouple'

Who Pane is for

best for
Developers on any desktop OS who want a free, open-source app to run several CLI agents in separate worktrees and watch them from a phone.
look elsewhere if
Teams that need a plain permissive licence, or want a hosted team product with support, since paid services are only planned.
