Coding agent (CLI) · Mistral AI
Mistral Vibe
Mistral's open-source terminal coding agent. Reads and edits code, runs shell commands, delegates to subagents, and supports a programmatic mode, git worktrees and MCP servers.
Mistral Vibe review
Mistral Vibe is Mistral's open-source terminal coding agent. The CLI is free under Apache-2.0, and use runs through a Mistral account with Free, Pro and Team plans. We read the vendor's pages and repository in October 2026. We did not run an independent test.
Who it is for
Developers who want an Apache-licensed terminal agent tied to Mistral models, with scriptable runs. It does not suit anyone who needs a documented built-in OS sandbox on Windows.
What stands out
Vibe reads and edits code, runs shell commands and delegates to subagents through a `task` tool. It has a built-in `--worktree` option and MCP server management from the CLI. The programmatic mode, `vibe -p`, supports exit codes, limits on turns, time and price, and JSON export.
For models, the docs say it works with a Mistral plan, a Mistral API key, other compatible providers and offline local models. The product page says the CLI is powered by Devstral. The README mentions Mistral Medium 3.5 for vision. Manual installs need Python 3.12 or newer.
Price and licence
The licence is Apache 2.0, so it is open source. The Free plan has limited coding sessions. Pro is $14.99 a month with full Vibe access and lists $15 a month in API credits. Team is $24.99 per user per month. Enterprise is by contact. Prices are from mistral.ai/pricing, seen 28 October 2026. You can also use an API key pay-as-you-go.
Where it falls short
- Windows works but is secondary. UNIX environments are the officially supported target, and the agent-socket sandbox mode is unavailable on Windows.
- That sandbox is an experimental external agent-server feature, not a built-in per-command OS sandbox.
- The Free plan limits coding sessions, so all-day use needs Pro or API credits.
- Voice mode and some features depend on Mistral-hosted services. The page for offline models returned 404, so local support rests on one docs statement.
Alternatives
See terminal coding agents. Gemini CLI and OpenCode are other options.
Facts: platforms, price and licence
- platforms
